Livable Ripples is a competition entry for the Seoul Yeoui-Naru Ferry Terminal Design. The ferry terminal is ultimately a system made by a combination of floating elements assembled on the surface of the Han River. It takes full advantage of its prime location wishing to be the new hub linking Han River to the metropolis. By connecting landmarks, people, activities and nature, it aims to be an example of urban transformation, to affirm an identity and to demonstrate eco-friendly ambition and high living quality.
This setup allows harmonious integration and access to the different pontoons, berth zones and programs clearly and distinctly. It imagines a world that takes the mundane and transforms it into a sparkling wonder of Livable Ripples.
Three main inspirations led the project; sparkling water, Hanok village typology of strong community values and the vibrant social atmosphere of the Republic of Korea. The atypical roofing system and the network of pontoons are an interpretation of the traditional Hanok typology. Spaces between roofs create large public courtyards, similar to “madangs” offering a platform of social interaction. By aligning the volumes to create inner madang courtyard and garden areas, we provide a human-scale context, diluting any possibility of disconnection between the volumes. Generous glass-panel windows effectively open up the interiors to the madang courtyards and encourage a sense of unity to flow throughout.
