Hanoi’s Press Club was built in 1997 placed above Vietnam’s Press Association. Its seven-floor building complements the colonialist ambiance of the French Quarter, along with historical monuments such as the Opera House and the Metropole Hotel. Home to writers and journalists since its inception, the space was intended as an exclusive meeting and fine-dining venue, a place where dignitaries, entrepreneurs, businessmen and expatriates could regroup and mingle.

Today the refurbishment of “La Table Hanoia” consolidates the existing restaurant and bar “La Table du Chef” and “La Plume”. The space seeks to represent the architectural legacy of a colonialist past in harmony with the cultural heritage of Vietnamese craft designed by the Hanoia brand, a specialist in high-end lacquerware.

The bar, safeguarded in its original location, stands iconic and central, bringing dynamic social energy to the space. This core element is sheltered under a series of green arches, molded of bespoke handcrafted lacquer. The volume pays tribute to the profile of the building’s original roofing, creating a protective shelter for the guest below. Lacquer-craft is particular to Vietnam, its materials traditionally sourced only in Asia and the complex techniques only achievable with mastery, and the unique air and water qualities of sub-tropical climates. The final material, with its many layers of paint and resin, creates an illusion of depth, absorbing the surrounding light whist projecting hues of green.

La Table Hanoia’s revisiting of ancient crafts pays witness to their design philosophy, embracing history, tradition and heritage, while celebrating contemporary Vietnamese lifestyle.
