Equatorial Utopia: 50 Years of Visionary Architecture in Singapore
2021
Singapore’s urban development has been fast paced over the past half century. After becoming an independent republic in 1965, the small island state with limited land and natural resources and a current population of approximately 5.6 million embarked rapidly on industrialization and urbanization programs to provide jobs and housing for its people. Ever since, the built and the natural environment have been high on Singapore’s agenda and its urban vision has evolved from a ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’ and now a ‘City in Nature’. In this context, Singapore has been the place of a number visionary projects that can be interpreted as ‘modernist utopian constructs’ for the building of the Nation.

Ho Chi Minh City’s bioclimatic architecture
Joshua Zukas
2021
On a sizzling April afternoon, a rainstorm pummels Ho Chi Minh City. Despite the deafening downpour, temperatures stay miserably high in the megacity’s concrete and glass-laden central districts. Urbanites remain sheltered in offices and cafés, which are sealed and air-conditioned. After the outburst, which lasts for an hour or so, the clouds crack and the sun resumes its offensive, turning the city’s soggy centre into a steam bath.
About 15km north-west of the vaporous centre, one building experienced the same storm differently. From above, Concrete Waves appears as a singular stack of giant white rings that encircle a lush jungle courtyard. While the breeze that accompanied the cloudburst was blocked from entering the airtight buildings in the city centre, here it swept through and cooled the space. Water lashed the building, but much of it was funneled to – and absorbed by – the green oasis within. After the rain subsided, air-conditioning units worked hard to keep the naked glass buildings in the city centre cool. But at Concrete Waves, sensibly positioned exterior sunshades protect the glass from the sun’s direct rays, while still inviting plenty of natural light, minimising the need for mechanical cooling.

The emergent understanding of the building and the city as ecological systems immediately raises the question of their interaction. In which ways does a "green building" contribute to the ecology of its surroundings? And how can ecologically designed urban districts, with their green and blue networks, link up with the elements and technologies of building design? These are questions of concept, of planning, of design and not least of experience. All these dimensions of "green building" are investigated in this book with substantial essays and benchmark case studies, in a collaboration of a research team with internationally renowned architects, urbanists and landscape designers – in an effort to understand and evaluate some of the most recent and innovative Dense+Green Cities in Asia, the Americas and Europe.

When the design for Punggol Waterway Terraces 1 was unveiled in 2010, it drew a flood of oohs and aahs. Rather than rectangular blocks, these Punggol flats have cascading roof gardens inspired by terraced rice fields, where residents and the public can relax and enjoy the scenery of the adjacent Punggol Waterway Park. Architecture firms G8A and Aedas designed the blocks to have a hexagonal layout, so that all residents have a direct physical connection with the landscape and their neighbourhood. The flats are shielded from the heat and the rain by undulating ribbons of ‘balconettes’, an architectural term to describe a false balcony, which are also sunshading devices. The project promotes the use of tropical ndesign, such as the cross ventilation of units, and shading from the sun. The lush planting of greenery in the estate supports biodiversity, improves air quality

Among the world's vast array of natural elements, mountainous landscapes have persistently inhabited the imagination of humanity and thus heavily influenced our endeavors. As architecture on the skin of the earth, mountains exert their force by both creating rungs on the ladder of the land and by forming labyrinthine clefts, both of which have become imbedded in our projects - they serve us by carving the matter of the earth so that it can be in greater contact with the environment, and thus more easily used as a substrate. This constant dialogue incorporated in our constructions aim to associate it within it's respective landscapes, the notion of contour and of integrating the architectural object into its location is essential to us. The location entrenches, dissolves and camouflages the contructions in a local context, as well as literally linking them into the globe."
